RCMP BC Highway Patrol releases video of dangerous motorcycle riding, fleeing police, confrontation, arrest

July 2, 2026

A Chilliwack man has wrecked his Harley-Davidson motorcycle after dangerous passing on a highway shoulder past an RCMP cruiser, fleeing that officer, crashing with a pickup truck and then, amazingly, confronting the driver who was rightly pulling over for police.

BC Highway Patrol media relations officer Cpl. Michael McLaughlin released the collision video Thursday (July 2, 2026) from two weeks ago on Highway 1 near the East 1st Avenue exit in Vancouver.

“Passing on the right is dangerous and illegal, and when police activate their lights, you need to pull over immediately,” Cpl. McLaughlin explained in a news release.

It was 9:22 a.m. on June 18, 2026, when a BC Highway Patrol in heavy traffic westbound on Highway 1 in Vancouver was passed by a black Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the right shoulder.

The dash-cam video shows the officer pursue the motorcycle on the shoulder. The officer activated his lights and siren, which prompted the driver of a blue pickup truck to correctly signal and pull off to the right.

Instead of doing the same, the motorcyclist continued passing on the right, which resulted in running over the footing of a temporary construction road sign, into the rear of the blue pickup, then falling over a concrete barrier.

“Passing on the right enrages other motorists, but that’s not the main reason that it’s illegal,” Cpl. McLaughlin said. “The side of the road has rocks, sand, garbage, shredded truck tires and other hazards, and if someone pulls off the road suddenly, you could end up badly hurt or worse.”

The video shows the 37-year-old Chilliwack man get up from where he crashed and walk to the door of the pickup truck where he apparently confronted the driver. Upon turning around, the motorcyclist was in for a surprise only to be handcuffed and arrested for flight from police.

The rider was handed two violation tickets: one for passing on the right off the roadway, contrary to section 158(2)(b) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act (BC MVA), a fine of $109; another for driving without consideration, contrary to section 144(1)(b) of the BC MVA, with a fine of $196.

The rider's Harley-Davidson was also impounded for seven days. This usually comes with a heavy bill from the two-truck company or other business that stores the vehicle. The motorcycle was too damaged to ride, but the Chilliwack man walked away with minor injuries.

Flight from police is a serious offence under section 320.17 of the Criminal Code, however after reviewing the totality of circumstances, Cpl. McLaughlin told Something Worth Reading that the rider will only face the MVA violations and the case will not be forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service to consider the criminal charge.

“We’re glad no one was hurt, but too many motorcyclists are passing on the right on Highway 1,” said Cpl. McLaughlin, “Consider this a warning to everyone: BC Highway Patrol can and will ticket drivers who pass on the right.”
