From Chilliwack to Africa: Documentary showcases those on the front lines of ‘rewilding’ global habitats for keystone species

From elephants in Africa to salmon in the Fraser River, conservationists around the world are focused on “rewilding” habitats humans have torn out of nature one generation after another.
Award-winning international documentary The Rewilders takes viewers to various locations, including the Fraser River near Chilliwack, where land is being “rewilded” for animals and animals are being rehabilitated to be returned to wild habitats.

“This is a film showcasing people who highly value what sustains life across three continents rewilding habitats for keystone species like Pacific salmon, bison, jaguars and elephants,” according to a news release about the film and an effent in Chilliwack this Sunday, May 31, 2026.
“The film follows the restoration of Gill Bar into St’óqweleqw, a vital habitat for salmon, sturgeon, and other wildlife. The Pelólxw Tribe combined Indigenous knowledge with Western science and energized local youth –future stewards of s’ólh téméxw.”

The documentary is being filmed on May 31 followed by a panel discussion at the Hub Theatre at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.
The film’s director Marlene Rodgers and producer/executive director Kyle Gunther will be in attendance.
The panelists after the film at 3 p.m. include:
- Elia Marie Lockhart, councillor with Sqwá First Nation;
- Roxanna Kooistra, environment manager, Cheam First Nation;
- Jason Lum, three-term Chilliwack city councillor;
- Steve Clegg, land stewardship manager, S.A.Y. Lands Office; and
- Eddie Gardner, Sqwá First Nation Elder
Film is May 31, 2026. Doors open to the public at 2 p.m., film is at 3 p.m. Ticket are just $10 available at www.chilliwackculturalcentre.com.
