Canadians who opted in to price fixing class action should see $49.11 e-transfers any day

May 22, 2026

Millions of Canadians who signed up for the $500-million packaged bread price-fixing class action settlement are getting more than crumbs in their inboxes this week.

Payments started going out in the Loblaw/Weston national class action settlement related to industry-wide price fixing.

Those who signed up during the three-month window to do so in 2025 are receiving e-transfer payments of $49.11 in inboxes now. Thats’ enough to buy a baker’s dozen of loaves of Wonder Bread, according to recent Loblaw's prices. Those who participated earlier in a $25 Loblaw gift card program will be getting that deducted, so $24.11.

To get in on the cash for price fixing, residents only needed to supply a bit of personal information and then state they purchased bread between 2001 and 2021. No proof of purchase was needed.

But the window to join the class action was Sept. 11, 2025 to Dec. 12, 2025 so if you didn’t get in on the dough for bread by then, you’re toast.

Canada's Competition Bureau began investigating the scheme that saw large grocery chains fix bread prices a decade ago in 2016. Weston Foods and Loblaw admitted that they participated in an "industry-wide price-fixing arrangement,” which the bureau alleged added $1.50 to the price of a loaf of bread.

The settlement administrator, Verita, started issuing the $49.11 payments last week dividing up $404 millions less court-approved expenses, or $24.11 for those who previously took part in the $25 Loblaw Card Program that divided up $96 million.

Verita said that because of the large number of claims, payments are being issued on a rolling basis and not all claimants will receive money at the same time.

If you are a claimant, Verita has a warning about possible scammers. The administrator will not send text messages requesting personal information or payment information. According to the Canadian Packaged Bread Class Actions Settlement website, legitimate e-transfer emails will only come from notify@payments.interac.ca.
