Iain Hunt was not charged with murder in connection with his wife's death, her body found near Hope in 2021

The husband of a woman found dead near Hope three months after she went missing in 2021 was again in court, this time in Prince George on Wednesday (Feb. 25, 2026)

Iain Rene Hunt, 52, is charged with one count of interference or indignity to human remains in connection with Trina Hunt's death. The actual cause of her death has not been released, but Hunt was reported missing five years ago on Jan. 18, 2021.

An extensive search was conducted by police, her family and members of the community. Trina's body was found south of Silver Creek near Hope on March 29, 2021. A few weeks later, the RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed the remains were that of the 48-year-old woman.

It took four years, but on Feb. 4, 2025, the BC Prosecution Service approved one count under section 182(b) of the criminal code that addresses dead bodies. Specifically, the charge is that a person is guilty of an indictable offence who "improperly or indecently interferes with or offers any indignity to a dead human body or human remains, whether buried or not."

A conviction comes with a sentence of not more than five years in prison.

Police did not have enough evidence to charge Iain Hunt with homicide.

"The laying of a charge does not dilute the loss and pain endured by Trina’s family and friends," said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT in a news release at the time the charge was laid. "There is still a long road ahead as the community continues to heal from her tragic death.

"However, today’s outcome is the result of the persistence and dedication by the investigators who were committed to seeing the case through and we must acknowledge this is a step forward as the court process begins."

There are nearly 10,000 members of a Facebook group started on Jan. 20, 2021 called "Find Trina Hunt, as a way to get support for the search when she was missing. The group's name was changed in June 2021 to "Justice for Trina Hunt."

Iain Hunt had first appearance at the Port Coquitlam Law Courts on March 4, 2025 at 9 a.m. He is scheduled to be in court in Prince George this afternoon (Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026) for a pre-trial conference. His next court date is scheduled to be back in Port Coquitlam on March 4, 2026. He is not in custody nor has he been in custody at all.
