Chilliwack’s first homicide of 2026 shatters Sunday morning calm downtown
IHIT involved as one dead, one seriously injured after shots rang out at residence close to two schools on Mellard Avenue after 8:30 a.m.
There are still few details as the Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) arrived in downtown Chilliwack shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 15, 2026) to a residence where two people had been shot.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene and one was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
The location of the shooting is Mellard Avenue just a block and a half from Central Elementary School to the west and two blocks from Chilliwack Secondary School to the east. Officers appeared to be focused on either 46071 or 46057 Mellard as the IHIT's large investigative unit parked at the driveway of 46071. Police tape blocked off the entire block of Mellard between Fletcher Avenue and Victor Street for the entire day.

There’s no word yet on names or relationship of the victims, whether this was domestic, gang-related, or otherwise targeted or any what other motive or means might have been involved.
There was a heavy police presence Sunday morning but quickly thinned out with officers at each end of taped off block, IHIT officers attending the residence.
Neither IHIT nor the Chilliwack RCMP have updated the community by Monday morning, but IHIT reported Sunday more information would be provided “at a later time.”
