All four times a judge ordered Bevin van Liempt to live with his mother, banned him from social media and contacting victims, yet he's back behind bars

If music instructor Bevin van Liempt apologized nine months ago, requested a sentence of time served and probation for his criminal harassment convictions of two 17-year-old students, it would be all over.

He would be out of jail, and his victims and others impacted by a long drawn out emotional and legal melodrama could move on with their lives.

Since his guilty pleas mid-trial in February 2025, however, the case has been beset by delays, unusual applications, erratic behaviour, threats of lawsuits, and judicial releases on bail conditions that the 34-year-old simply will not or cannot abide by.

The first criminal harassment case began in spring 2024. From then until two weeks ago on Oct. 20, 2025, van Liempt was released on bail three times to live with his mother, well-known Chilliwack classical music conductor Paula DeWit, and all three times he violated release conditions sending him back to jail garnering more criminal charges.

With the summer behind bars at the Surrey Pretrial Centre to mull over his guilty pleas and a pending sentencing hearing, van Liempt instead began a series of self-represented legal manoeuvres that have confounded criminal justice system participants, tormented his young victims, shocked many watching closely in the local music community, and, maybe, fascinated neutral observers

Having spent from June 5 to two weeks ago in jail because of breaches in the spring, his sentencing hearing Oct. 20 turned into a discussion about his Charter applications, then turned into a bail hearing. He was released by Judge Paul Sandhu on $750 to live with his mother, banned from using social media or contacting the victims or witnesses, among other restrictions, including alcohol use outside the home or while connected to the internet.

A busy two weeks

Then on Friday (Oct. 31, 2025), 11 days after van Liempt’s release to prepare for sentencing and his applications, seven days after he filed lawsuits against as many as 20 people connected to the case, five days after a scheduled trial for a previous breach led to a peace bond, and two days after his Charter application hearing was scheduled for late January, the 34-year-old was arrested yet again for using social media and contacting one of the victims.

The new alleged breach apparently occurred Oct. 29 in the evening for messaging the girl via Instagram. He was arrested on Halloween and spent the weekend back in jail. Now, on Nov. 3, 2025, he’s at Surrey Pretrial scheduled for a video appearance in the afternoon to set yet another bail hearing date as well as a trial date for his latest breach.

The unfortunate drama of this case is far from over as both he and his mother claim to be victims of conspiracies, threaten defamation lawsuits, all of which is leaving witnesses, victims and their family members suffering continued trauma and uncertainty.
